What does Kawaii mean?
The word kawaii can be translated as “cute” “adorable” or “lovable.” At first, this Japanese concept was only popular in Japan and surrounding areas, but eventually it became a global phenomenon.
The kawaii culture can be reflected in many aspects of this lifestyle, such as food, fashion, makeup, personal appearances, accessories and more. The term “kawaii” has the connotation of charming, shyness, darlingness and innocence. However it involves more than that, it also includes things like Emoji, Pokemon Go, Manga, Harajuku.
So how did it all start?
Kawaii is believed to have originated in Japan in the late 1960’s and early 1970s with a group of teenage girls, and university students. At the time there were a lot of student protests rebelling against authority. Some refused to go to school lectures and read children books instead, these protests also involved a cute childlike style of handwriting, which eventually escalated to clothing styles, makeup, overall appearance, and a sense of playfulness and appreciation for anything “cute.” It became a way to express themselves in a creative way.
Popular Kawaii Characters
Some of the most popular include: Hello Kitty, My Melody, Chococat, Keroppi, My Little Twin Stars, Pom Pom Purin, Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma, Totoro, and more.
